Today, a tour was held to show them off. The ones highlighted were species that bloom only during the summer. A group of plant enthusiasts gathered to let a guide educate them about the park’s exotic garden. I followed the tour for a little while and learned that a fenced-off tree that is on display in the park is three hundred years old.

4th of July Fun in Flatiron and NYC http://www.flatironhoteventhall.com/2016/09/07/4th-of-july-fun-in-flatiron-and-nyc/ http://www.flatironhoteventhall.com/2016/09/07/4th-of-july-fun-in-flatiron-and-nyc/#respond Wed, 07 Sep 2016 20:54:41 +0000 http://www.flatironhoteventhall.com/?p=15806

If you’ll be spending the 4th of July weekend in the Big Apple, you have a wealth of options at your disposal in the Flatiron District. If you’re looking to have a nice picnic with your family, Madison Square Park is the place to go. Not only will you be surrounded by the beautiful scenery, but you’ll have the original Shake Shack right there in the park if you’re in the mood for burgers, fries, and of course, milkshakes. You can take it from me: those shakes are fantastic. And while you’re there, you should also check out the one-of-a-kind sculpture, “Big Bling.”

Get Ready for July 4th in Flatiron!

Get Ready for July 4th in Flatiron!

If you’re planning on catching the Macy’s 40th Annual Fourth of July Fireworks show, Flatiron’s also got you covered. Just head to the Fourth of July BBQ and fireworks event at the rooftop bar at 230 Fifth, which runs from 12 PM to 4 AM with a $20 cover from 7 to 10 PM. The fireworks are from the Brooklyn Bridge and four other barges between 23rd and 37th Streets. For more info, you can call the venue directly at (212) 725-4300.

If you’re near Central Park, then you’re in luck, because there’s a summer-long festival of the arts taking place there call Summer Stage. And the good news is that nearly every event is free. If you want to swing by there during July 4th weekend, there is the Freedom Party dance party on July 2nd from 6-10 PM, and on July 3rd you can catch exotic musical performances by Nigerian artists King Sunny Adé and Orlando Julius, as well as nightclub DJ Rich Medina. The concert is from 2 to 7 PM. Click here for more info.

And finally, there’s something for you French food lovers out there. A series of French restaurants are offering special discounts from July 4th-17th. Click here for the details. Don’t miss out!

I hope this information will help you have an awesome New York 4th of July. To figure out how to get where you want to go, visit the the MTA’s website.

A Quick Tour of the Northern Section of the High Line Park – Hudson Yards Vistas http://www.flatironhoteventhall.com/2016/09/07/a-quick-tour-of-the-northern-section-of-the-high-line-park-hudson-yards-vistas/ http://www.flatironhoteventhall.com/2016/09/07/a-quick-tour-of-the-northern-section-of-the-high-line-park-hudson-yards-vistas/#respond Wed, 07 Sep 2016 20:52:00 +0000 http://www.flatironhoteventhall.com/?p=15798 The Chelsea District, for so long bereft of parks and open space, now has access to the wondrous and trend-setting High Line Park, with an entrance at the midpoint of its north-south route just a short stroll from NYCSCC at 23rd Street and 10th Avenue.  With the opening of the northern-most section leading up to and around the burgeoning locale of the Hudson Yards – slated to be the City’s newest and most dynamic neighborhood, and with a whole series of major residential and business towers and parks literally rising before our eyes just west and north of Flatiron and Chelsea – I decided to take a tour of the High Line, starting at 23rd Street near our NYCSCC HQ, and traversing north, then doubling back south to see how much it had changed since my last odyssey a couple of years back – and boy, was it an eye opener – (See this link for an overview of the High Line itself) !  Since my last visit, a whole new section had been created, with buildings and vistas on either side springing up and making the walk an incredible visual treat.  For all those attending NYCSCC for an event, take some time after hours and sample this newest, and most compelling addition to  New York City’s park system!

Checking out the Newest High Line Section at Hudson Yards!

The High Line, as you probably know, was an abandoned and rusting elevated rail spur created to service the long-departed manufacturing buildings located along the Hudson River in lower Manhattan; It was spared from the wrecking ball by far-sighted and energetic local visionaries who formed a non-profit conservancy (The Friends of the High Line), and lobbied and fought tooth-and-nail to raise money and, ultimately, transform it from a rusting hulk into a rebuilt and revitalized urban pedestrian pathway that would give city goers a whole new viewpoint on their homes, their lives and their city.  It’s the best possible example of a public/private partnership, and of what’s possible when citizens work together in a positive and determined way.

The views of the river and the neighborhoods that it traverses are at once new and familiar.  The elevation from street level and the scenes down the avenues give us clear views of many things we did not see before – the river, our buildings, our neighborhoods.  And, in a typical New  York fashion, its very success has stimulated a building and real estate boom that has led to a series of eye-opening new buildings and remodeled older ones featuring cutting edge design which, as one traverses the paths on the elevated walkway, scream “can you top this?”  The High Line is filled with architectural and landscaping treats galore, and it is the perfect place for people-watching in a busy city, complete with street performers, artists selling their wares, kids playing, lovers and families strolling and taking in the sights.

To whet your appetite for a visit to this special NYC-Chelsea-Flatiron Treat, check out this Flatiron Hot! News VIdeo Clip that gives you just a small taste of what you can expect on the High Line.

New at Flatiron Prow – “Flakes” by Chelsea Browne Hyrnick http://www.flatironhoteventhall.com/2016/09/07/new-at-flatiron-prow-flakes-by-chelsea-browne-hyrnick/ http://www.flatironhoteventhall.com/2016/09/07/new-at-flatiron-prow-flakes-by-chelsea-browne-hyrnick/#respond Wed, 07 Sep 2016 20:44:55 +0000 http://www.flatironhoteventhall.com/?p=15792 Reported by the Flatiron Hot! News Editorial Staff

The ever-interesting Flatiron Prow exhibition space has turned over again, as of this past month, and the subject is the intriguing “Flakes” by Chelsea Browne Hyrnick. The exhibit features a series of hanging, multicolored and textured cut-out shapes of origami paper, that gradually coalesce into a series of undulating geometric patterns.  It’s just about the most exotic, luminous and prolific mobile one can imagine – especially at night with the interplay of the passing cars and the street lights.  Well worth a look as you walk by the Flatiron Building at 23rd Street and 5th Avenue.  Kudos, as always, to Cheryl Mcginnis Gallery for keeping us on our toes, and challenging our concept of public art!

5 Fun Facts About the High Line from NYC Seminar & Conference Center http://www.flatironhoteventhall.com/2016/09/07/5-fun-facts-about-the-high-line-from-nyc-seminar-conference-center/ http://www.flatironhoteventhall.com/2016/09/07/5-fun-facts-about-the-high-line-from-nyc-seminar-conference-center/#respond Wed, 07 Sep 2016 19:49:21 +0000 http://www.flatironhoteventhall.com/?p=15788

There’s plenty to do in New York City, from attending a classic theater performance to dining at the best restaurants in town. If you’re looking for a more organic experience in the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple, then the High Line is where you should be. This elevated park is home to some of the most beautiful gardens the city has to offer, and NYC Seminar and Conference Center recommends making time to enjoy it while you’re in town.

Here are some fun facts about the High Line:

  • It Used To Be An Old Rail Line: Believe it or not, this gorgeous elevated park used to be a fully functioning rail line. After the last train ran in 1980, the rail line was abandoned for almost 20 years. When two residents of the High Line neighborhood began petitioning for the area’s preservation and reuse, the park started to take shape.
    • Thousands Take the High Line Journey:When it opened in 2009, over 300,000 trekked the High Line in the first 6 weeks. Now, just about 20,000 people visit the park each weekend.
    • The Idea Originated from the French: Originally, it was the French who converted an old rail line into an elevated park. NYC borrowed and expanded upon that idea, creating the wonder of the High Line that exists today.
    • It’s Over a Mile Long: The High Line spans over one and half miles. Throughout that distance, visitors can expect to encounter flowers, foliage, old train tracks, and a beautiful cityscape.
    • It’s Open All Year: Whether you’re in town for a summer conference or attending a series of winter seminars, visiting the High Line is a fantastic way to escape the daily grind. Rain or shine, this park is open to the public year-round.

4 Fun Facts About the Flatiron Building http://www.flatironhoteventhall.com/2016/09/07/4-fun-facts-about-the-flatiron-building/ http://www.flatironhoteventhall.com/2016/09/07/4-fun-facts-about-the-flatiron-building/#respond Wed, 07 Sep 2016 19:39:03 +0000 http://www.flatironhoteventhall.com/?p=15778 New York City’s Flatiron Building is one of the most beautiful buildings to visit and photograph in the entire city. Whether it’s set against a bright blue sky or misty rain, the Flatiron has a regal elegance that translates into breathtaking photos. Every so often, we like to stop and think about a magnificent structure it’s all too easy to take for granted, especially if, like us, you see it every day.

Here are four facts you might not know about the Flatiron Building:

  • It has an impressively long history. Construction was completed in 1902, making it one of the city’s oldest icons. The Chrysler Building wasn’t finished until 1930, and the Empire State Building was completed the next year, in 1931.
  • The Flatiron Building is only 22 stories tall. It’s technically a skyscraper, but still seems small amidst the other towering giants of NYC. By comparison, the Empire State Building has 108 stories, and One World Trade Center has 94.
  • It’s as skinny as it looks. The offices at the narrow end of the building are just over six feet wide!
  • It stirred up a bit of controversy. Like so many innovative buildings, the Flatiron’s construction was met with a chorus of critics. It was the first triangular skyscraper, and many had doubts that the building would withstand a strong gust of wind.

The Flatiron Building itself is only one of the neighborhood’s many draws. With world-class eateries, exciting activities, and gorgeous architecture at every turn, there’s never a dull moment.
